Ashes 2017-18: Mark Stoneman Feels England Could Have Been In a Stronger Position

England, who began their second tour match against CA XI at the Adelaide Oval in Adelaide on Wednesday, finished at 278/8 at stumps on Day one. England top order batsmen got good starts but couldn’t consolidate on the start and lost wickets at crucial stages of the innings. England could have been in a much better position had they not lost three wickets in the last five overs of the day.

Three of England’s top five batsmen scored half-centuries but couldn’t build upon the start. Alastair Cook and James Vince also started well but lost their wickets at crucial stages. Dawid Malan top-scored for the three lions as he scored 63 but like others lost his wicket at an essential stage of the day and couldn’t capitalize on the start.

England’s new opener Mark Stoneman also impressed as he scored 61 at the top of the order. But the Southpaw feels that England should have been in a much better position looking at the starts the batsmen got.

Stoneman said:

“Some of the dismissals we had today were on the sloppy side so it’s frustrating that we didn’t kick on and have a couple of hundreds scored, credit to the opposition who have got themselves back in the game. It was a decent day’s cricket. We spoke about how important it’s going to be out here to get yourself into an innings. From that point of view, it was encouraging that everyone got a bit of time in the middle but we also need to be scoring hundreds and big hundreds so there’s lessons to be learned.”

Stoneman threw away his wicket lofting a full toss and got caught at mid-wicket off a 21-year-old spinner from New South Wales:

“The thinking behind it was when he did bowl slower there was an opportunity to get it on the full, the bat twisted a little in my hand and I clothed it to midwicket so it was disappointing. It was a chance to make a really big score and get myself into the tour.”

Talking about his performance he said:

“The rhythm’s there, the timing has been pretty good so I’m happy with how things are progressing but it would have been nice to get a hundred.”

Stoneman felt confident ahead of the first Test and said that facing the Aussie pace attack isn’t a point of concern for him:

“I wouldn’t say it’s a concern, it’s just something to be aware of in terms of your mindset. It’s [the CA XI attack] been a progression from the opposition we faced in Perth but the work we do in practice is all geared towards that first Test.”
