Ashes 2017/18: Mason Crane Says England Confident of Retaining the Urn

England played their first warm-up match ahead of the Brisbane Ashes Test over the weekend and had a decent outing with both bat and ball.

The two-day match ended in a draw but gave the English team a little exposure to the Australian conditions. England won the last Ashes 3-2 at home in 2015 and are looking forward to retaining the Urn. The last time England team travelled Down Under was in 2013, and they were handed a 5-0 thumping by the Aussie team inspired by Mitchell Johnson.

However, the only genuine English spinner on tour, Mason Crane believes that the England team is confident of retaining the Ashes this time around. Crane is the only specialist spinner in the squad apart from all-rounder Moeen Ali.

Crane is hoping to make his debut in the upcoming Ashes series. Crane believes that the English bowling lineup is capable enough of picking up 20 wickets in a Test,

“Everyone’s main aim is to go back home and say ‘we won The Ashes, confidence is high at the moment, the batters are hitting well, and there’s a lot of talent in there. We know how good the bowling attack is with James Anderson and Stuart Broad.”

Crane has played in the Sydney grade cricket for Gordon Cricket Club and later became only the second overseas player to play for New South Wales after Imran Khan. He feels his experience of playing Down Under will help him adapt to the conditions better,

“The confidence is high, and the next warm-up match will prepare us well for the first Test in Brisbane, these wickets with their bounce, that bit of extra bounce suits me. I sometimes miss that at home, and hopefully, that extra bounce can find the edge where sometimes it doesn’t. I’ve got to be realistic, Moeen Ali is a brilliant bowler and bats a lot higher than I do but I will keep working hard and play as many games as I can.”

The next warm-up match for England is a four-day (D/N) against CA XI at the Adelaide Oval in Adelaide on Wednesday.
