Ashes 2019: Watch – Steven Smith Gets Standing Ovation
Australian cricketer Steven Smith got a standing ovation after getting out for the last time in the Ashes 2019 on last Sunday (15th September).
In last one-and-a-half-month long Ashes 2019, Steven Smith dominated with the bat. His master-level batting massively helped Australia to retain the Ashes title.
Before the Ashes 2019, Smith didn’t play a Test in the last 16 months. Due to facing the one-year suspension period for involving in the sandpaper gate incident in March 2018, Smith missed the Test cricket for a long time.
He returned to the international cricket in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019. Though he performed well in that tournament, he wasn’t consistent with his bat. In that CWC 2019, Smith scored 379 runs in 10 innings with an average of 37.90.
Then, the 30-year-old made his Test return during the first game of Ashes 2019 at Birmingham. Smith scored 144 and 142 runs in that Test match which finally led the Australian team to win that match 251 runs. It was just the start of his dream run.
In the second game at Lord’s (London), Smith scored 92 runs but missed the entire fourth innings due to the concussion. Even, when he was batting on 80 runs during Australia’s first innings, Jofra Archer’s delivery hit on his neck and he decided to retire hurt for a short time.
Smith missed the third Test at Leeds due to the concussion. But before the fourth Test, Smith has climbed up the no.1 position in the Test batting rankings.
The right-handed batsman returned in the fourth Test at Manchester where he scored 211 and 82 runs respectively. Once again, his dominance batting helped Australia to win that match by 185 runs.
Steven Smith scored 774 runs in Ashes 2019
In the fifth and last Test at The Oval, Smith scored 80 and 23 runs. Except for the final innings, Smith managed to score 75+ runs in each innings of Ashes 2019. He finished the Ashes 2019 journey with 774 runs in seven innings with an average of 110.57. It was the record runs for a batsman in a 21st century Test series.
Cricket fans enjoyed Steven Smith’s extraordinary batting performances. After the English pacer Stuart Broad dismissed Smith on 23 runs in his final innings of Ashes 2019, the spectators gave a standing ovation to the Aussie batsman.
