Australian veteran opener David Warner revealed that he won’t engage in any war of words against England players in the much-awaited Ashes series. The Australian opener had a reputation for being in the face of the opposition and not playing the game in the right spirit in past years.
David Warner has become more of a team man since his return from the 12-month ban imposed on him due to the ball-tampering scandal. The 36-year-old is hopeful that he will not get engaged in any banter with any of the England players throughout the Ashes 2023.
Speaking to ICC, David Warner believes that the high-stakes series will be played in the right spirits and said that he will not be involved in the on-field banter against England team, as they are no real banters between the team.
“It just sells papers and clickbait, so I won’t be getting involved in any of that stuff, I will leave it to themselves. Today there is no real banter in the field,” David Warner said.
Warner said that it is important for them to play quality cricket and come over the opponent in crunch moments of the game.
“It is just about playing quality cricket and trying to get the upper edge on each other. It is a lot more connected these days than before which I think is great for the game.”
David Warner will be part of the Australia Squad for the World Test Championship final and Ashes 2023 despite his poor form in red-ball cricket. However, Warner is backed to reclaim his spot at the top of the order for the WTC final, which will be played from June 7-11 at the Oval in London.
David Warner Always Plays His Best When His Back Is Against The Wall – Usman Khawaja
Australian opener Usman Khawaja believes that David Warner has been batting at his usual best in the nets ahead of the WTC Final and reckons that the Australian southpaw has always found his best when pushed back against the wall stating the example of his double century against South Africa in his 100th test in International cricket.
“I have seen him bat in the last couple of days and, I don’t want to jinx him, but he is looking good, This is probably the best I have seen him look in the nets for a while. That doesn’t always correlate to runs, but if we are any chance of Davey Warner scoring runs this could be it”.
“He always plays his best when his back is against the wall too. We saw when he scored a double century in his 100th game when everyone was writing him off and telling him he was done and it was his last game and he went out and gets 200. You never write off a great player, so I am expecting runs.”
In his last 15 Tests innings, he has crossed the 50-run score just once which was the double century against South Africa. Warner has found English conditions particularly testing in the past and compiled only 95 runs in 10 innings during the most recent Ashes campaign there in 2019. Australia
