Australian left-arm spinner Ashton Agar will miss the rest of the ODI series against India after fracturing his finger while fielding during the third ODI at Indore.
The 23-year old will now return to Australia to take few more tests for further assessment of the injury with a possible surgery if needed. Agar had tried to stop the boundary in the 17th over when Indian opener Rohit Sharma hit the ball towards deep square leg fence.
However, while trying to stop Agar dislocated his finger and was immediately taken off the field to receive treatment. But he managed to come back to the field and bowl his full quota.
Australia’s team doctor Richard Saw said that the young left-arm spinner might need to undergo surgery if required and might miss the start of the domestic season for Western Australia.
“Following the conclusion of the match he went for x-rays, which have confirmed a fracture of the finger,” Dr Saw said in a statement.
“He will return home to Australia and consult a specialist with a possibility of surgery.”
However, the exact timelines of his recovery period is yet to be known as the details can only be revealed after meeting with a specialist. The only positive for Agar is that the injured hand is his right which would be quite a relief especially considering he is a spinner.
With Agar set to go back home, Adam Zampa remains the option for Steve Smith going into the final two ODIs. The young leg-spinner was dropped in favour of Agar during the second ODI but will now find his way back into the starting XI.
On the other hand, Cricket Australia will also need to announce the replacement for speedster Pat Cummins after revealing that he would back home post the ODI series. The timing of the injury is terrible for Agar as the talented all-rounder has recently gained his place back in both ODIs and Tests.
