S Sharath, the chief selector of Tamil Nadu Ranji team, has said that Ravichandran Ashwin is an automatic selection in the side if he is available for selection.
“Picking Ashwin is not a tough call at all. He can just walk into the team, if he is not on national duty. He adds immense value to our side, and combined with his outstanding and unparalleled dedication to the game, Ashwin is an automatic choice in selection,” he told Sportstar.
Tamil Nadu opens its Ranji Trophy campaign against Andhra Pradesh on October 6. The state-side is all set to avail the services of Murali Vijay, who will be making his comeback to the first class format. However, there are still doubts over Ashwin ‘s participation as he has just finished his county stint with Worcestershire and is yet to reach India.

Even though if he agrees to play, the Tamil Nadu selectors have to wait for selection meeting of Indian cricket team as Ashwin can be considered for a place in the squad for T20I series against Australia. The chances of this happening are quite small, but still, no one can rule him out of the equation.
Tamil Nadu selectors yet announce the squad for the first game of Ranji Trophy, and there can be a case when they might announce their team as soon as BCCI confirms the T20I squad.
Meanwhile, Washington Sundar has confirmed his place in the team with a superb performance in the final of Duleep Trophy. In his only game of the tournament, the off-spinner created a record of most wickets by a debutante, i.e. 11. He also contributed 88 runs with the bat and won the Man of the Match award as well.
Unlike last year, we might see a new man leading Tamil Nadu in Ranji Trophy as selectors are pondering to hand Vijay Shankar the duty to lead the team in the first-class format as well.
