Ashwin’s performance against NZ will send chills through Steve Smith’s men, says Ian Chappell

The last time Australia faced Ravichandran Ashwin, they were completely destroyed by the Indian off-spinners. With an astonishing 29 wickets in the series, Ashwin played a pivotal role in India’s 4-0 win against the Aussies in 2013. And the spinner has only improved after that series. His red-hot form continued in the recently-concluded Test series against New Zealand where he took 27 wickets in only 3 matches.

With India scheduled to play 10 more Tests at home, it is expected that the bowler will wreak havoc on the visiting teams and former Australian cricketer Ian Chappell believes that the Ashwin’s current form will “send chills through the Australian team” who are scheduled to visit India early next year.

Writing in his column for ESPNcricinfo, Chappell said: “Ashwin has already inflicted much pain on Australia as did Laker, Prasanna, and Harbhajan before him. Consequently, his dominant performance in the series against New Zealand will send chills through Steve Smith’s squad. Ashwin’s 27 wickets (at 17.77) and man-of-the-series award against New Zealand could be viewed as a prelude to the main performance.

Chappell also said that Ranagana Herath’s success against the Aussie batsmen in the Test series earlier this year will give a lot of confidence to left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja. The Ashwin-Jadeja partnership has been one of the biggest reasons for India’s recent success in the longest format of the game. In the Test series against New Zealand, Jadeja was the second highest wicket-taker with 14 wickets.

“In a few months time, Ashwin will face an Australian line-up traumatized by the portly left-arm Sri Lankan finger spinner, Rangana Herath. As Ashwin’s spin bowling partner, left-armer Ravindra Jadeja will be buoyed by Herath’s success. Not only does this not augur well for Australia’s batsmen with their distaste for spin bowling, it will also revive memories of 1956 and the destruction caused by Laker and his partner — the left-arm orthodox spinner Tony Lock,” Chappell added.
