Asia Cup 2018: I Can’t Understand Ravindra Jadeja’s Selection – Ajit Agarkar
India all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja made a comeback in the coloured clothing in the Asia Cup 2018 as the replacement for injured Axar Patel.
However, the men in blue got promoted to the super four stages, following wins against Hong Kong and Pakistan. While Rohit Sharma-led side had to earn a victory against the minnows, they were prolific against arch-rivals Pakistan.

Meanwhile, India suffered a major blow, as Hardik Pandya got stretched off the field during the tie against Pakistan. Pandya has done considerably well in limited-overs cricket and getting sidelines derailed India’s prospects. While his exit is a loss, the defending champions find strength in Jadeja.
Ravindra Jadeja replaces Hardik Pandya
The BCCI, on Thursday, announced Deepak Chahar, Ravindra Jadeja and Siddarth Kaul as replacements for Pandya, Axar Patel and Shardul Thakur, respectively.
However, the former Indian pacer, Ajit Agarkar has questioned Jadeja’s inclusion. He referred to Chahar and Kaul’s call-up as “T20 selections”, and added Krunal Pandya should have made the cut.
Agarkar also expressed his displeasure on Umesh Yadav’s omission from the side. Yadav last featured for India in the Test series against England. Krunal, on the other hand, impressed one and all in the domestic circuit. In a recent Vijay Hazare Trophy 2018 game, Pandya scored 85 runs and picked a wicket against Mumbai.
“Yes, strange couple of changes for India. Firstly, I don’t know where Umesh Yadav is? He only played one Test in England. Deepak Chahar and Siddharth Kaul both looked to me like T20 selections. I like Chahar; he can swing the ball, he has got abilities. But he is not the like-for-like replacement for Hardik Pandya. Hardik is a much better batsman than he is. You have lost Shardul Thakur, your out-and-out seamer and they have gone from Siddharth Kaul, but ideally, you should have gone for someone like Umesh Yadav, who has a bit of experience,” Agarkar told ESPNCricinfo.
Agarkar questions Jadeja’s inclusion
Agarkar said the selectors might have gone for Jadeja due to the nature of the wickets in Dubai. The all-rounder is someone who bowls wicket to wicket.
“Maybe they have seen the pitch condition and realised that they don’t need pace and need a bowler who can bowl straight. I can’t quite understand Ravindra Jadeja selection, to be honest. It was a nice opportunity for the selectors to bring someone like Krunal Pandya. He seems to be doing okay in List A cricket and Vijay Hazare Trophy.” he remarked.
He also showed a lack of confidence in Jadeja. Agarkar feels Jadeja isn’t equipped enough to bowl ten overs apart from batting in crunch situations.
“For Jadeja, is the captain confident enough to bowl him ten overs on flat conditions? That is the reason he went out of the team for he was no longer effective enough, nor getting wickets. Krunal Pandya is a better batsman. Jadeja has got abilities, but you wouldn’t bat him in top six.” he said.
