Former India skipper Sourav Ganguly feels stand-in skipper Rohit Sharma is capable of guiding his team to the coveted title in the upcoming Asia Cup 2018.
Meanwhile, India will be without their regular skipper Virat Kohli, who has been playing continuous cricket. The selectors decided to give him some rest to manage his workload. The likes of Manish Pandey, Kedar Jadhav, and Ambati Rayudu have got a nod for the Asia Cup.
However, all eyes will be on MS Dhoni, who had a tough time during the tour to England. He struggled to score runs at a good pace as India lost the ODI series 2-1. Subsequently, there were speculations about Dhoni bidding farewell. However, he cleared all the air regarding the news going around on the internet.
Sourav Ganguly believes India without Virat Kohli is strong enough to lift the trophy.
“India could not do that well in England but in limited overs, they are a top side. The team is much stronger with Virat but Rohit has a very good record as captain so I expect him to do well too. They are capable of winning (the Asia Cup),” said Ganguly.
The men in blues are the most successful team in the Asia Cup, having won six of the 13 editions of the tournament. They have also won the only competition played in Twenty20 format, in 2016, making them the defending champions.
They won the inaugural competition in 1984, and then in 1988, 1990-91, 1995 and 2010 before the last one.
