Bangladesh opener Tanzid Hasan had a poor ODI debut on Thursday against Sri Lanka in the group stage of the Asia Cup 2023. The young batter trudged off the ground without troubling the scorers. The 22-year-old made it into the squad for the continental event due to the unavailability of the experienced Tamim Iqbal.

The left-handed opener was dismissed for a second ball duck on his ODI debut. Hasan completely misread the ball of the Sri Lankan spinner Maheesh Theekshana after Bangladesh opted to bat first against the defending champions Sri Lanka at the Pallekele Cricket Ground in Kandy.

Tanzid Hasan was brought into the team after his brilliant performance in the recently-concluded Emerging Asia Cup but could not replicate his fine form for the senior Bangladesh team, thus becoming the fourth Bangladesh opener to get dismissed for a duck in the ODI cricket and the 16th cricketer overall from the country to achieve this unwanted record in International cricket.

Rafiqul Islam was the last Bangladesh batter before Tanzid Hasan to achieve this record against South Africa in 2002 and the left-handed opener will be hoping to put a good performance against Afghanistan in the final game of the group stage and to help their side give a real chance to qualify for the group 4 of the tournament.

Bangladesh openers Tamim Iqbal and Litton Das have been ruled out of the 2023 Asia Cup after they were unable to recover from the injury. The Shakib Al Hasan-led side struggled to get going at the top of the order, failing to put some impactful performance for the team.

Tamim Iqbal is expected to return to the team during the home series against New Zealand on home soil, as his form will be crucial for his team going into the big event.

The southpaw has been a stalwart of the team since 2007, playing an important role in their team’s win and the veteran is also the leading run-scorer for Bangladesh in International cricket.

The Shakib Al Hasan-led team will face Afghanistan in the must-win game of the group stage in Gaddafi Stadium, as a win will enable them to have a chance to advance to the next stage of the Asia Cup 2023.
