Star Indian middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer made a comeback into the Indian team for the Asia Cup 2023 after proving his fitness in the game. The 28-year-old was part of the Indian team setup in all three formats of the game before a serious injury ruled him out of the game for a certain period of time.
It was reported that the 28-year-old played a couple of practice matches before the India Asia Cup 2023 squad was announced and it was reported by the NCA officials that he batted for over 35 overs and fielded the whole 50 overs without any discomfort which helped him to make comeback into the Indian team.
According to the reports in TOI, Shreyas Iyer had a brilliant match stimulation practice at the National Cricket Academy, where he scored 199 runs in a practice tie followed by fielding for the entire 50 overs in the match, which gave the confidence in his fitness in the team.
“He smashed the bowlers at the National Cricket Academy, scoring 199 in a practice tie. To provide the selectors with more evidence of his fitness, he then fielded for the entire 50 overs of that match, which was held at the Just Cricket Academy in Bangalore 3-4 days back,” a source told TOI.
“For the past two months, he has been stationed at the NCA in Bangalore, focusing on his recovery. It’s all come together nicely for him,” it stated.
Shreyas Iyer has the tremendous skillset to play in all three formats of the game, but his biggest strength lies in the 50-over format of the game, as he has taken the spot of the crucial number 4 spot in the Indian team in the last couple of years.
His composure and ability to read the situation can certainly come in handy for the team in difficult situations and the prolific batter has been the highest run-scorer in 2022 across the format. In the 42 games so far, he amassed 1631 runs at an average of 46.6 providing stability in the Indian middle order. He has struck two centuries and 14 half-centuries in 38 innings and will prove his worth in the continental event.
Asia Cup 2023 will be held in Pakistan and Sri Lanka is based on the hybrid concept, where both countries will co-host the event as four matches will be played in Pakistan, and the remaining nine matches will be played in Sri Lanka.
