Bangladesh Cricket Board president Nazmul Hassan revealed that they haven’t decided on the captaincy for the ODI team as they need to check on the availability of Shakib al Hasan before appointing him as the skipper of the team going into the Asia Cup 2023 and ODI World Cup 2023.
The captaincy position become after their skipper Tamim Iqbal stepped down for the captaincy position following a back injury which is likely to rule him out of the continental event. Shakib al Hasan currently holds the leadership position in T20 and Test cricket and is likely to candidate to succeed Tamim Iqbal as he got a wealth of experience leading the team in all three formats.
During the press conference, BCB president Nazmul Hassan revealed that they will take some time to appoint the skipper for ODI as they will look to think long term to captain the side, and with the World Cup near they also need an experienced player to lead the team in the high-pressure tournament.
“We have not discussed captaincy yet. We have to take a break and think about it. As I have said before, if it was one series, we could have gone with the vice-captain (Litton) but now we have to think long term,”
“There are two problems. If we think about the long term it is one thing. But there is the World Cup as well and the pressure of the World Cup is not small. If I select a new guy and whether he can take this pressure – we need to consider that as well. If we choose someone on a long-term basis and he is not available after one year, what will we do? So we need to discuss these things,” Nazmul Hassan said
Bangladesh has emerged as one of the better teams in white ball teams in world cricket as the teams played quality cricket in the mega ODI event. They will look to utilize their experience to do well in the sub-continental in the ODI World Cup later this year.
Leading In The Bilateral Series And World Cup Are Two Different Things – Nazmul Hassan
Nazmul Hassan said that experienced Shakib Al Hasan is the obvious choice to lead the team but there also needs to think and plan about the future of the team and added that it was a different kind of pressure to lead the team in the World Cup to that of a bilateral series.
“Shakib is the obvious choice but can you say he will play for two years? We don’t know that and so we need to know his plan and talk with the board. I think the easiest choice is Shakib and there is no problem with it,”
“Leading in the bilateral series and World Cup are two different things. And whether that influences his (Litton) batting or not, we need to see everything. We will decide without hurrying it up,” Nazmul Hassan added
The team has experienced players in the lineup with the likes of Litton Das, Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim, and Mahmudullah in the team, as they will look to use their experience to do well in the forthcoming ODI events.
