AUS vs PAK 2016-17: Australia Name Unchanged Squad For Brisbane Test

Buoyed by the success against South Africa in the last match of the recently concluded three-match series, Australia have named an unchanged 12-man squad for the first Test against Pakistan, starting December 15 at the Gabba.

After the fifth straight loss in Tests, the Australian cricket board took some stern steps to stop the rot as they made five changes to the team that lost by an innings and 80 runs against the Proteas in Hobart. The new-look squad repaid the faith by winning the dead rubber at Adelaide by seven wickets and have been duly rewarded by the selectors for their impressive show.

Trevor Hohns, interim chief selector, said the team deserved another chance. “We were very pleased with how the team came together in Adelaide after some significant changes following the Tests in Perth and Hobart. This is a young group with a lot of promise and we believe all deserve their opportunity again in this upcoming Test.”

While Matt Renshaw and Peter Handscomb were more or less assured of retaining their spots after their impressive shows in Adelaide, there were doubts lingering on Nic Maddison’s place after he got out for a 12-ball duck. However, Shaun Marsh has still not recovered fully from the finger injury which might have paved the way for Maddison’s selection in the squad.

Alex Kountouris, Australia’s physiotherapist, confirmed Marsh has still not resumed batting.

“Shaun has yet to resume batting and will have a follow-up x-ray this week that will be reviewed by a specialist,” he said. “This will determine when he can resume cricket training.”

The first Test starts on December 15 and will be followed by matches at Melbourne (December 26) and Sydney (January 3).

Australia’s Squad: Steven Smith (c), David Warner, Jackson Bird, Peter Handscomb, Josh Hazlewood, Usman Khawaja, Nic Maddinson, Nathan Lyon, Matthew Renshaw, Chadd Sayers, Mitchell Starc, Matthew Wade.
