Complete domination with the bat saw Australia go 1-0 up in the series and pile on the misery on Pakistan, who escaped a defeat in the series-opener. In the second T20I, Pakistan’s middle-order failed to assist their captain Babar Azam, who scored 50 off 38. Opener Fakhar Zaman (2 off 7) was the first batsman to be dismissed.
He was followed by Haris Sohail (6), Mohammad Rizan (14) and Asif Ali (4), all of whom failed to make any significant contributions. Thanks to 62* off 34 from Iftikhar Ahmed, Pakistan managed 150/6 on the board in 20 overs.
Defending the target wasn’t an easy task and it turned out to be an easy win for Australia, who chased down the target in 18.3 overs. For the first time in the home season, a bowler managed to dismiss David Warner in T20Is. Aaron Finch failed (17 off 14) to convert his start into a big one but Steven Smith, who is not rated highly as a T20 cricketer, stepped up.
His gritty 80* off 51 made the day for Australia. The former Australian skipper’s shot selection was the highlight of the day as he played proper cricketing shots to churn out gains against Pakistan’s bowlers.
One can expect pacers to make merry at Perth Stadium and the match might not be a high-scoring one.
