Three wickets towards the end have left the final Test evenly poised as Australia finished the day on 307 for 6, 48 runs ahead of the visitors’ first innings total of 259. Earlier, a century from Usman Khwaja (138*) and half-centuries from Steve Smith and Peter Handscomb had given the hosts a solid platform to take command of the match but a lower order collapse gave the Proteas a chance to claw their way back into the match.
Resuming the day on 14 for no loss, Australia had a mighty scare when they lost debutant Matt Renshaw and David Warner with only 37 runs on the board. The hosts had already suffered numerous collapses in the last few Tests and another wicket would have put the new-look team under immense pressure. But Khawaja along with captain Steve Smith steadied the ship with 137 runs partnership. The partnership was broken when a mix-up resulted in Smith’s run out.
The wicket did not derail Australia’s innings as another solid partnership between debutant Nic Maddinson and Khawaja helped Steve Smith’s men to surpass South Africa’s total. The 99- run partnership ended when Kyle Abbott dismissed Maddinson for 54. But all the good work of the top order batsmen was undone when the home team lost three wickets in space of 24 balls.Khawaja along with Mitchell Starc, then, ensured that the hosts do not suffer another loss.
Here is how Twitter reacted to the day’s play:
Day/Night Test Cricket is fantastic .. Love the visual but more so the change in conditions that you have to deal with … #AUSvSA

Khawaja's past 2 Test summers at home: 174, 9*, 121, 144, 56, 4, 97, 4, 64, 127*
= 800 runs @ 100#AUSvSA— Adam Burnett (@AdamBurnett09) November 25, 2016
Is Handscomb better than Bradman? I don't want to get carried away but he's certainly made more runs on debut. #AUSvSA

And Pete Handscomb brings up his Test half century on debut. Proving his position in this side is so richly deserved ?? ? #ausvsa

He has only faced a handful of Balls but already you can see Peter Handscomb can really play … #AUSvSA
— Michael Vaughan (@MichaelVaughan) November 25, 2016
Victorian born Peter Handscomb is perhaps the only Aussie to appear in Tests, while holding a British passport.#AusvSA

Sorry to labour the point. But is Faf still a mastermind for getting Khawaja in early?#AUSvSA #RealOpeners
— Richard Hinds (@rdhinds) November 25, 2016
That decision to declare by Faf was premature #AUSvSA ?

A wicket changes the mood quickly. Khawaja needs some help to build a good lead as the new pinko tests sighting the ball for new batsmen

So Wade was picked for his batting right? Oh yes and his loud mouth… It seems only one of those was working today #AusvSA

Only the 2nd instance of AUS having debutants at #5 & #6 since 1954.
The other instance – R Ponting (96) & S law (54*) v SL, 1995 #ausvsa— Deepu Narayanan (@deeputalks) November 25, 2016
I hope David Warner watched every minute of Usman Khawajas innings… He could learn a lot #patience #class #AUSvSA
