Australia, on Friday, announced their 14-man squad for the upcoming One-Day International series against India. The hosts have recalled Peter Siddle, Nathan Lyon and Usman Khawaja for the blockbuster series in addition to dropping several big names. From the team that lost to South Africa at home, Chris Lynn, D’Arcy Short, Ben McDermott, Travis Head and Ashton Agar have been dropped. Nathan Coulter-Nile is also not in the squad owing to an injury.
The hosts have also decided to rest their pacers – Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood- after the pacers’ heavy workload in the ongoing Test series.
“After a hefty workload in the Indian series to date, it has been decided not to select Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood in this squad to allow them to freshen up for the Test series against Sri Lanka,” chief selector Trevor Hohns said.
In their absence, Australia will rely on Jhye Richardson, Jason Behrendorff, Peter Siddle and Billy Stanlake to take care of the pace bowling department.
Siddle is bracing up for his first ODI in 9 years, having last played an 50-over game way back in 2010. The right-arm pacer recently impressed in the Big Bash League, picking up three wickets for Adelaide Strikes against Syndey Thunder.
“It’s wonderful to have Peter back in the squad for the first time since 2010. His white ball cricket has improved considerably the older he has got, and his selection is a great reward for his professionalism and strong leadership qualities,” Hohns said.
Australia had a dreadful run in ODIs last year. The reigning world champions managed to win just two ODIs and have thus decided to boost their batting lineup. Consequently, they have recalled Mitchell Marsh and Peter Handscomb. Marsh’s last ODI appearance came during the disastrous tour of England last year when Australia suffered their first 5-0 whitewash against the bitter rivals. On the other hand, Handscomb’s last ODI was in India during their 2017 October tour.
Sydney Cricket Ground will host the first ODI on January 12. The long tour will conclude with the third ODI at MCG on January 18.
