Australia has announced a preliminary squad for England’s tour in September. 26 players have been listed in the squad but the final list will be announced after the tour’s schedule is confirmed. Glenn Maxwell and Usman Khwaja have also been named in the list though they haven’t played for Australia for an extended period.
Australia tour of England was initially scheduled this month but the ongoing coronavirus had postponed the tour. As per reports, September is being seen as a possible window for organising three one-day and three Twenty20 internationals in England.
Australian players practicing for the tour:
Australia had already begun training camp last month under security guidelines. The players included in the preliminary squad will also start practising for the tour which will be their first away series since the outbreak of the coronavirus.
“The England Cricket Board is a long-standing and valued international cricket partner and we are doing all we can to give the tour the best possible chance of taking place,” said CA’s head of national teams Ben Oliver.
“In the meantime, the identification of a preliminary list will enable us to work with players and states more directly on the preparation for the tour in the hope it can proceed.”
The smallest continent will also host Zimbabwe, New Zealand and India later this year.
Glenn Maxwell returns:
The middle-order batsman Glenn Maxwell, who is a white-ball specialist cricketer, had taken a break from the game last year in October to deal with the mental health issue. He played the Big Bash League in December but didn’t play any international since then.
Thus, the England tour is his comeback series. Meanwhile, Usman Khwaja, who was also dropped from the team after the Ashes series has been named in the squad.
Three uncapped players Daniel Sams, Riley Meredith and Josh Philippe are also in the preliminary squad.
