Australia vs India 2018-19: Gautam Gambhir Bats For Patience With Underperforming Openers
Although India beat Australia by 31 runs in the first Test, there is no denying that their opening conundrum continued. KL Rahul, who could have bought some more time for himself after scoring 44 in the second innings, and Murali Vijay failed to justify their selection.
In the first innings, the two could add only only 3 runs but managed to add 63 in the second. But unlike Rahul, Vijay flopped in both the innings. The right-hander, who was drafted in the playing eleven after Prithvi Shaw’s injury, did little to justify the move as he scored just 11 and 18.

Vijay was recalled into the Test side for this series and scored an impressive century in the warm-up game to prove his credentials. However, he once again failed to get going with the bat.
The team-management is highly likely to drop one of them the moment Shaw recovers from the ankle injury. However, former India batsman Gautam Gambhir has backed the duo, saying that one needs to be patient with the openers.
“You’ve got to be patient with them. Facing the first ball on the first day is probably the toughest job in Test cricket. If it was easy everyone could have done it. A lot of greats who got 10,000 to 15,000 runs never opened in Tests,” he said.

He further said that chopping and changing the team affects a player’s confidence and make them insecure.
“I believe in security. If you keep rotating players for what is the toughest thing to do, you only make them more insecure. Give them a proper run and see if they belong to the level. If they don’t, get somebody else and give them the same run. You have to be fair to everyone,” Gautam Gambhir added.
He also had a word of advise for the visitors, urging them not to be complacent and take Australia lightly.
“We now have the early advantage which we never had on the previous two tours. Hope we can consolidate. But you can never take Australia lightly. They still have the bowling attack to hurt any opposition.”
