Australia vs India 2018-19: Rohit Sharma And R Ashwin In Line To Play Adelaide Test?
It looks like Ravichandran Ashwin and Rohit Sharma are all set to feature in the playing eleven for India in the upcoming first Test against Australia. Both the players were seen sweating it out in the nets on Monday despite it being an off day. And what further bolsters their chance is that they trained under the watchful eyes of head coach Ravi Shastri and the rest of the support staff.
Both the players especially Rohit are not certain for the series-opener in Adelaide. In case Rohit gets the nod, he is likely to bat at number six. However, the number six spot could be a big headache for the team-management as they will have to decide one between Hanuma Vihari and Rohit. Vihari, who scored an impressive fifty on his debut in England, scored another fifty in the warm-up game to stake his claim. On the other hand, Rohit, who is making a comeback in Tests through this series, has been in red-hot form in white-ball cricket. But given that the team-management decided to train him on an off day is a big indication that he is in scheme of things for the Adelaide Test.

On the other hand, Ashwin might sit out of the game due to his poor overseas record. With the Australian pitches less likely to be spinner-friendly, India is more than likely to play one spinner. And given Ashwin’s struggles outside the subcontinent, the team-management could pick one between Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja.
Ashwin has taken 21 wickets at an average of 54.71 in six previous Tests in Australia. The performance in Australia is not at all par with his overall performance. So far, Ashwin has bagged 336 wickets at 25.44.
It should be noted that India had dropped Ashwin for Jadeja in the last Test against England. Jadeja had then made the most of the opportunity by impressing with both bat and ball.
Well, only time will tell whether Ashwin and Rohit get the nod or not for the first Test against Australia. But the recent turn of events suggest that they are the frontrunners.
Taking to Instagram, BCCI posted photos which read: “When Hitman and Ash stepped out to get a feel of the nets #TeamIndia #AUSvIND.”
Meanwhile, Cheteshwar Pujara has backed Ashwin to succeed in Australia this time around.
“If you see his recent bowling, I think he has made a lot of changes,” Pujara said. “I can’t describe what it is, not in front of the media. But he has made some adjustments which has helped him.
“He has played enough cricket in England which is obviously different conditions, not much help for the spinner. So I think when he’s playing in Australia, he knows what he has to do.
“He has also played a series in 2015 (here) so he’s very confident now. And whatever adjustments he had to make, he has already done it,” he added.
The first Test will get underway on December 6.
