Australia vs Pakistan 2016-17, 1st Test: Twitter Reacts As Asad Shafiq’s Ton Gives Visitors An Outside Chance
Dec 18, 2016 at 5:51 PM
The first Test between Australia and Pakistan is set to have an exciting finish as the hosts need just two wickets while the visitors need 108 runs on the final day to take lead in the series.
Earlier, resuming the day on 70 for 2, Younis Khan and Azhar Ali played gutsy knocks to keep the Australian bowlers at bay for 27 overs before Azhar Ali edged a Mitchell Starc delivery to the wicketkeeper after scoring 71. The partnership was worth 91 runs and had set the tone for a strong fightback. However, the visitors failed to capitalise on the solid partnership and lost Misbah-ul-Haq (5) and Younis Khan (65) to let Australia take charge of the match.
Sarfraz Ahmed and Asad Shafiq then managed to hold firm and take their team into the dinner break without suffering another setback. However, Sarfraz was clean bowled for 24 by Mitchell Starc in the fifth over after the play resumed, making the task of saving the Test even tougher for the visitors. But a 98-run partnership between Shafiq and Mohammad Amir revived Pakistan’s hopes of an unlikely result from the match before Amir was dismissed by Jackson Bird for 48. Wahab Riaz, who looked good for his 30, lost his wicket to Bird on the third last ball of the day as Pakistan finished on 382/8. Asad Shafiq was unbeaten on 100 while Yasir Shah was on 3.
Here is how Twitter reacted to the day’s play:
Only the 5th time Pakistan have batted 100+ overs in the 4th inns of a Test outside Asia. Most: 137.5 overs at MCG in 1989-90. #AusvsPak
