Australia vs Pakistan 2016/17: Brad Haddin Backs Nic Maddinson For Boxing Day Test
The pressure is clearly mounting upon underperforming youngster Nic Maddinson, who recently made his Test debut against South Africa at Adelaide. Maddinson was dismissed for a duck on debut by Kagiso Rabada and is yet to play a handy knock. After the roller coaster of a Test between Pakistan and Australia at the Gabba, Australian selectors added Western Australia all-rounder Hilton Cartwright into the squad for the Boxing Day Test at Melbourne.
However, former wicket-keeper Brad Haddin, in his chat with the press, admitted Maddinson deserves to be backed for the next Test against Pakistan. He was of the view that Maddinson had been unlucky and could soon play a decisive knock if given a long rope. The former keeper batsman went on to say Maddinson played both Tests with the pink ball, which were difficult for batting.
“He’s been a bit unlucky, to be honest,” Haddin said in his conversation. “He’s got a couple of good balls, he’s played his first two games against two pink balls which is a bit different, so I’m glad they’ve given him Melbourne to give him the opportunity to get some runs and I hope they give him the rest of the series.”
Urging the selectors to be patient with Maddinson, Haddin said, “I know Trevor Hohns said when he picked this squad that you’re going to have to be patient, and Nic Maddinson is one of those players I think.” “But you can’t hide behind the fact he needs a big score.”
