Australia vs Pakistan 2016/17: Yasir Shah Will Learn From This Tour, Says Mickey Arthur

The tour of Australia was bound to be a massive hurdle for Pakistan, and if the visitors had any hopes of doing well, there was very little room for error. With two Tests gone and the third one underway at Sydney, Pakistanis stare at a possible whitewash and their 12th consecutive Test defeat Down Under. A key factor behind the lackluster performance has been the form of Yasir Shah.

Yasir, who was termed as the world’s best spinner few months ago by Shane Warne, has bowled worse than a part-timer would on these shores. He has looked utterly clueless and not even for a little session of play has he been perceived as a threat. The Kangaroos have obliged on his offerings and the game at Sydney was yet another dismal outing for the leggie.

Post the second day’s play, coach Mickey Arthur backed Yasir and said he would improve with time. “He will learn from it. He has played a lot of cricket in the subcontinent, where he dominates,” Arthur said. “This is his second tour outside of those sort of conditions. He has struggled here. I remember when I was coaching Australia, Ravi Ashwin said it was the hardest place for him to bowl. Ravi Ashwin made absolutely no impact in Australia.”

Arthur also backed the under-performing Mohammad Amir and lauded the youngster for his dedication. “When he gets wickets, he’ll get them in bucket loads,” Arthur said. “I thought he was outstanding in Melbourne, he’s been a little off here. Over the last six-seven months we have played a massive amount of cricket. He keeps running in for us.”

The Pakistan coach termed team’s catching as “frustrating”. “Very, very frustrating,” Arthur added. “We can’t work any harder on our fielding. We set high standards, I make no apologies for that. “We have fallen short in the fielding standards by a long way. We don’t want to be labelled as a poor fielding team.”
