Australian all-rounder confident ahead of series against South Africa
The spotlight will be on the Australian team when they take on South Africa in their own backyard. The Kangaroos were recently lauded for their spectacular performance in the ODI series against Sri Lanka as they went on to win the series 4-1. Against South Africa though, the Australians will have to be far more cautious, as the Proteas are a force to reckon with in ODI’s, that too in their own conditions.
A noticeable aspect about Australia’s squad has been the rest given to ace pacers Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood. In absence of the reliable duo, the Aussies have offered a chance to a few uncapped pacers keeping in mind the near future. According to star all-rounder Mitchell Marsh, the Australians are well prepared for the series, and their pace attack can be led well by John Hastings.
“Whilst we’ve got not much experience at international level, the guys deserve to be here and I’m very excited to see how we all go and we’ve certainly come here to win the series,” Marsh said. “I can’t wait to get into it. Obviously, we’ve got John Hastings who’s going to be the leader of the attack with a wealth of experience and who over the past 12 months he’s been behind Starcy has been our best one-day bowler. So, I still feel like we’ve got a fair bit of experience in the line-up and it’s going to be good fun.”
Marsh spoke about the significance of using reverse swing as a weapon in South Africa in the latter stages of the innings. “I think the big thing is if we can get the ball reversing in the last 10 overs of the innings over here. As batsmen, we know that if the ball is moving a little bit it’s obviously a lot more challenging at the end of an innings.”For me, certainly, in one-day games, it’s about keeping it simple and trying to execute my plans every ball. And it will be nice to see the ball bouncing above waist height most of the time,” he said.
The younger Marsh concluded by saying that the rivalry between Australia and South Africa, was among the fiercest ones in the modern day. “Over the last couple of years, weve built up a great rivalry with the South Africa team. We play against these guys so much now we’ve got our plans against them, it’s just about going out there and executing on the day.”
