Australia’s Win in India Could Hamper David Warner, Steven Smith’s Return – Allan Border

Former World Cup-winning skipper Allan Border believes Australia’s series win in India could hamper the return of David Warner and Steven Smith. Both players ball tampering ban will get over on 29th March but they will not play the five-match bilateral series against Pakistan in the UAE. However, both of them will join the squad.

Meanwhile, Allan Border believes it would not be easy for both talisman batsman to straightaway walk back into the Australian team. Border feels the former skipper and vice-captain will need to prove their mettle before the World Cup to get back into the squad.

Smith and Warner should prove their mettle.

Thus, both of them will like to impress in the upcoming Indian Premier League. David Warner will play for the Sunrisers Hyderabad whereas Steven Smith will join Rajasthan Royals.

“Given the success of the side at the moment, if they continue to play good cricket against Pakistan with the squad they have at the moment, you’d probably be tempted to keep that lot as is,” Border told foxsports.com.au.

“I think they (Smith and Warner) come back into the squad, but whether they play or not is not a done deal. They need to be playing better than the incumbents to be automatic selections,” he added.

On the other hand, former Australian wicketkeeper Ian Healy also agrees with Allan Border. Healy believes there is not a lot of room as the current players have proved their skills.

“Handscomb’s doing that job in the middle order, Ashton Turner has already pushed out Shaun Marsh. So there’s not a whole lot of room, is there?” Healy told foxsports.com.au. “And Khawaja is doing a magnificent job in the place of Warner, so they’re not definitely coming back into the XI. Their IPL form and friendly form before the World Cup – if they get chances – will all be taken into consideration.”

Meanwhile, Australia would take a lot of confidence from the series win in India. Consequently, Australia will have some good selection headaches when Smith and Warner will get back into the team. Australia has done a great job and they should be given the credit for coming back from the behind to win the series in India.

On the other hand, Steven Smith and David Warner are big players and they will hold the key to the side. However, at the same time, it would be unfair on the players who have performed well in the side and ask them to make way for Warner and Smith, who are yet to prove their mettle once again.
