Axar Patel, the spin all-rounder shattered MS Dhoni’s 17-year-old record in the 2nd ODI against West Indies on Sunday. The spin-bowling all-rounder played a match-winning knock for India in the series decider at Queen’s Park Oval. He was named the Player of the Match for his batting heroics.

The second One Day International (ODI) of the three-match series between India and the West Indies marked the arrival of a new sixer king in the international arena. Known for playing crucial cameos with the willow in the Indian Premier League (IPL), bowling all-rounder Axar Patel proved his batting credentials in the 50-over format during the series decider 2nd ODI against the West Indies at the Queen’s Park Oval on Sunday.

Axar Patel Breaks MS Dhoni And Yusuf Pathan’s Record Of Most Sixes By An Indian Batter Batting At No. 7 Or Lower

Axar Patel, who was infamously tormented by MS Dhoni in the IPL, has shattered a longstanding record of the former Indian skipper. Completing India’s memorable run-chase in the 2nd ODI against the Men from the Caribbean, all-rounder Axar Patel slammed a match-winning half-century for the Shikhar Dhawan-led side at the Queen’s Park Oval.

Axar Patel struck five sixes in his whirlwind knock of 64* off just 35 balls in the recently concluded contest between the two former world champions. Finishing things off in style for India, the all-rounder smashed a massive six to confirm India’s thrilling win over the Men from the Caribbean in the series decider.

Axar Patel, who smashed five sixes in his career-best knock holds the record of smoking the most number of maximums by an Indian batter batting at No.7 or lower during a successful run chase in ODI cricket. MS Dhoni had smashed 3 sixes in India’s successful run chase against Zimbabwe in 2005. Former Indian all-rounder Yusuf Pathan had matched MS Dhoni’s feat twice against South Africa and Ireland in 2011.

Riding on Axar Patel’s match-winning knock, Shikhar Dhawan-led India outclassed the West Indies in the 2nd ODI. With the thrilling two-wicket win, India has extended the winless run of the hosts in the 50-over format. India has also taken an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match ODI series. The all-rounder was named the Player of the Match for his batting heroics. India will meet the West Indies in the 3rd ODI on Wednesday.

Axar Patel turned out to be India’s unlikely hero with the bat as he scored an unbeaten 64 off just 35 balls to help India chase down a big 312-run target against West Indies in the second ODI in Port of Spain. The win ensured that the Shikhar Dhawan-led Indian cricket team takes an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.

His innings included five sixes and three fours. Set a stiff target of 312, the visitors were tottering at 205 for five in 38.4 overs but Axar Patel rescued India with his six-hitting prowess, taking the visitors home with two balls to spare on Sunday. Axar Patel came in to bat when India was tottering at 205/5. The all-rounder shared a couple of crucial stands with Deepak Hooda and Shardul Thakur, respectively.
In 2005, former Indian captain MS Dhoni powered India to a four-wicket win against Zimbabwe. He smashed an unbeaten 67 (63) in the chase. MS Dhoni smashed three sixes during his knock. Nearly 17 years later, Axar Patel broke MS Dhoni’s record by hammering five sixes.
Axar Patel brought up his half-century in 27 balls, now the second-fastest for India in the format against the Windies. He is only behind former Indian skipper Kapil Dev, who took 22 deliveries to complete his fifty against WI in 1983.
