Axar Patel, the Delhi Capitals all-rounder, played a crucial role in their team’s five-wicket victory against Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Shikhar Dhawan too scored a century as Delhi won and went atop the points table. He maintained that he was trying to time the ball in the last over bowled by spinner Ravindra Jadeja, who was preferred over injured pacer all-rounder Dwayne Bravo.
Axar Patel Was Trying To Time The Ball And Not Hit It Too Hard
Delhi Capitals chased down the stiff target of 180 after their opener Shikhar Dhawan scored his first century in IPL which came off 58 balls with 14 fours and 1 six at a strike rate of 174.14. But Axar Patel turned out to be the unlikely hero by hitting three sixes and remaining unbeaten on 21 from only five balls at an incredible strike rate of 420.
“When I saw that the last over is being bowled by left-arm spinner and the boundary was shorter on one side, I was just trying to time the ball and not hit it too hard. My formula was to see the ball and hit the ball,” Axar Patel told Shikhar Dhawan in a video posted on iplt20.com.
The last over by Ravindra Jadeja saw 22 runs as Axar Patel hammered three sixes. Shikhar Dhawan was unbeaten on 101 as Delhi Capitals move again at the top of the points table with seven wins and only two losses in nine matches. They have 14 points in their points tally.

Earlier, Chennai lost the opener, Sam Curran, without scoring. Apart from him and skipper MS Dhoni, the rest batted well. Faf Du Plessis scored 58 off 47 balls while Shane Watson contributed with 36 off 28 balls.
Ambati Rayudu scored 45 off 25 balls and remained unbeaten, and Ravindra Jadeja played a cameo again by scoring 33 off only 13 balls with four sixes. Delhi Capitals bowlers apart from Axar Patel were expensive. Anrich Nortje picked two wickets.
In reply, Delhi Capitals opener Prithvi Shaw didn’t score, and Ajinkya Rahane scored eight. Wicketkeeper-batsman Alex Carey scored only four from seven balls while Shreyas Iyer scored run-a-ball 23.
Marcus Stoinis scored 24 off 14 balls. But the two unbeaten batsmen Shikhar Dhawan and Axar Patel were the ultimate heroes. Shikhar Dhawan scored 101 not out after scoring fifties in the two previous matches. He failed to score more than 35 in the first six innings.
CSK face Rajasthan next while Delhi face Kings XI Punjab next. CSK are placed 6th with 6 points to show owing three wins in nine matches.
