Michael Vaughan’s tweet has been receiving varied responses from fans. Some even feel that the ‘batting friendly’ pitch of Karachi, which has been termed as a ‘road’ by many, made it quite easier to score runs for Babar Azam. There were those too who echoed Michael Vaughan’s sentiments by putting Babar Azam at the No. 1 position.

Babar Azam Credited Team Effort As Abdullah Shafique And Mohammad Rizwan Also Contributed To Salvage A Draw In The 2nd Test

Babar Azam’s knock kept Pakistan alive in the contest after Australia set them the greatest fourth-innings chase in Test cricket history. Chasing 506, Babar Azam arrived in the middle when the hosts were batting at 21/2 in 22.2 overs. He then went on to add 228 runs for the third wicket with opener Abdullah Shafique.
Babar Azam scored 196 off 425 balls before getting out to Nathan Lyon. By the time he was dismissed Pakistan had reached 392/5 with a little period of play remaining in the day. Pakistan finished their marathon second innings at 443 for 7 with Mohammad Rizwan unbeaten on 104.
Speaking of his own performance as well as the team’s in the Karachi Test, Babar said in the post-match presentation ceremony: “The plan was to bat session-by-session and build partnerships. It was a team effort, as others (Shafique and Rizwan) chipped in with useful contributions too. We took the onus and the main focus was to build partnerships right throughout the day.”

“Rizwan was outstanding as he saved the Test for us eventually. We wanted to continue to bat in the same way (after the tea break) and we tried to be positive and play our shots. The team needed this knock, so I tried to bat for as long as I could.”
With his 196-run knock, Babar Azam went on to create a huge new record, becoming the captain with the most amount of runs scored in the 4th innings of a Test match. He went past former England skipper Mike Atherton’s tally of 185* runs to do so.
The knock is also the highest individual score for a Pakistani cricketer in the fourth innings of a Test match. The previous best was by Younis Khan, who had scored 171* against Sri Lanka in 2015.
