Shortly after the entire ‘Sandpaper Gate’ unfolded at Cape Town, the Australian cricketing fraternity unleashed their wrath on the prime perpetrators of the incident.
While a portion of the global cricketing universe was empathetic to Steve Smith’s situation, calling life ban on the former captain as too severe, others joined forces to demand a life ban on Smith by Cricket Australia, for bringing disrepute to Australian sporting culture instead.
A lethal fast bowler for Australia during the 70’s, Jeff Thomson joined the latter half of the cricketing universe and called for a life ban on Steve Smith and co.
“They should not get a match penalty, they should just get flicked. I don’t care who they are, they should be- just see ya later,” commented a ruthless Jeff Thomson according to 9news.com.au.
Thompson went on the record to claim that Bancroft’s action stained the reputation of Australian cricket, a heritage preserved since many decades.
The greatest punishment Smith will face is that for the rest of his life, this will haunt him: Matthews
“It’s a slur on everyone who’s ever played cricket. They’re like spoilt brats if it doesn’t go their way, they spit the dummy, whinge about it, carry on stupidly,” added Jeff Thompson.
Stalwarts such as Trevor Chappell and George Matthews reckon that this move of Smith’s is going to haunt him for the rest of his life.
Matthews, who presented Smith his NSW cap, went one step ahead to term this incident as one of the lowest moment for Australian cricket.
“Australian cricket is in the doldrums now. One of lowest efforts ever, lowest moments ever. As far as worse things go, it’s certainly in the grand final,” says Matthews.
“This guy loves the game, trains more than anyone else, thinks about it more than anyone else, he’s not sleeping well at night thinking about the game of cricket, he’s not going to be sleeping too well for a while now. Clearly, the greatest punishment Smith will face is that for the rest of his life, this will haunt him,” concluded George Matthews.
