BAN vs AUS 2017, 1st Test: 2-0 Remark from Bangladesh Camp Surprises Steven Smith

Ahead of the first Test of the much-awaited two-match series in the subcontinent, Australian skipper Steven Smith was unreservedly taken by a surprise when he was asked to record his reaction after a couple of hosts’ players claimed that the Bangladesh side is capable of winning the series by 2-0, including the Tigers coach.

“It’s pretty confident, isn’t it?,” Smith was quoted by the Daily Star in the pre-match press conference.

After a 2-0 victory in favour of Bangladesh came as a shocker for Smith, he further believes the hosts must be confident of their players, and the visitors are looking forward to focusing on their game. The right-handed batsman reiterated that there would be no complacency shown in the longer version of the game.

“Look, they are obviously confident about their skillset at the moment,” Smith added.

Moreover, Bangladesh under the tutelage of Chandika Hathurusingha has made significant progress, as Australia would be aware of the fact that the Tigers levelled the two-match series at home in October against England.

“They are at home and most teams play well at home and Bangladesh have been playing well at home so it’s going to be a good challenge for us,” Smith maintained.

In the recent past, the mind games might have had done wonders for the teams, but Smith has a different opinion this time around, as he came up with the statistics to defend his points during the question and answer session at Mirpur in Dhaka.

“I think Bangladesh have only won nine of their 100 games so it’s very confident,” Smith further added.

Smith, who emerged as a spinner following his international appearance made a significant improvement through these years, as he believes his Bangladesh counterpart and the 29-year Dhaka-born gloveman Rahim has enhanced his five-day game.

“I have not played a lot against Mushfiqur as a captain but I think he has improved a lot in the last couple of years in his game,” Smith said.

Interestingly, Rahim would be playing his 55th Test after averaging 35.48 in 100 innings, as he amassed 3,265 runs. He has smashed five hundred and 17 fifties.

“I think he will be looking forward to playing this series against Australia. He has scored some valuable runs for Bangladesh,” Smith concluded.

In 54 Tests, Smith has amassed 5,251 runs at an average of 61.05. He smashed 20 hundred and 20 fifties, respectively. Earlier, the two-day warm-up game between Australia and Bangladesh Cricket Board XI has been cancelled after the portion of the Fatullah Stadium was waterlogged following the incessant rainfall in Dhaka.
