BAN vs AUS 2017: Darren Lehmann Backs David Warner to Come Good in Asian Conditions

Australian head coach Darren Lehmann has backed opener, David Warner, to change his indifferent form on Asian pitches and play a pivotal role in the upcoming two match series against Bangladesh.

Warner has been a prolific run scorer for the Aussies at home and averages over 60 but when it comes to abroad, his average comes down to 37 and in Asian conditions, it is barely 30. It is really an area of concern for such a destructive batsman and Lehmann is hopeful Warner will improve his record in the upcoming series.

“I think he’s realised what he can and can’t do,” Lehmann was quoted as saying by cricket.com.au where the Australian 14 man squad gathered for a week long training camp.

“I’m pretty confident that he’s going to turn his form around on the subcontinent. He looks good from what I’ve seen of him so far, and he got starts in India (earlier this year) without going on.

“If he goes on, then we’ll have a really good series in Bangladesh. So for him, and for the team, we need him to make big runs as he normally does (in Australia),” Lehmann said.

Lehmann emphasised on the fact that on Asian pitches you must score 450 plus instead of making 350 and bat for long hours which will be their plan for the two match series which won’t be easy for the Aussies given Bangladesh’s good run at home, of late. They also defeated England in their previous series which proves their mettle.

“We saw that in India, so the key is instead of making 350 you have to make 450-plus and bat a long time. First innings runs are going to be paramount as per normal, and it’s going to be the batters job to get us there.”

Lehmann also conceded that a change in tempo of batting style helped Australia give India a tough fight during their previous tour. The Aussies won the opening Test on the back of some sensational bowling by Steve O’Keefe but surrendered the Border Gavaskar Trophy by losing the Bengaluru and the Dharamsala Test.

However, after a 3-0 debacle in Sri Lanka just a year back, it was surely an inspired performance put up by the Aussies.

“They played at the speed the game needed to be played at, whether it was slow or fast, or taking the game on at the right times and playing a different sort of game to what we would normally play on the subcontinent.

“From my point of view, the way they adapted and changed to conditions – and each wicket during that India series was different – that was a really great.

“But while that was a competitive series and a great series to watch and be part of, at the end of the day we fell short and we’ve got to get better in a few little key areas when we get to Bangladesh,” Lehmann concluded.
