Bangladesh Decimate Sri Lanka At Dambulla To Go 1-0 Up
Dambulla witnessed a one-sided contest as the visitors decimated hosts Sri Lanka in the opening ODI of the series. Bangladesh have commenced the limited overs leg of this tournament with a clear message, that they shouldn’t be discounted upon, especially in the subcontinent. After annihilating teams back home, they are heading towards their aim of winning ODI’s overseas now.
Things began with Sri Lankan captain Upul Tharanga winning the toss and inviting the hosts to have a bat first on what was a belter of a surface. That decision was soon regretted as opener Tamim Iqbal set out in full flow against the Sri Lankan new ball bowlers.
Along with fluent stroke-maker Sabbir Rahman, Iqbal added 90 for the second wicket in a little less than 17 overs. That pretty much set a solid foundation for Bangladesh, as Tamim carried on with his aggressive stroke play. Despite losing Mushfiqur Rahim early, Iqbal then got along with Shakib Al Hasan to script Sri Lanka’s demolition.
In the due course, Iqbal became the first ever Bangladesh batsman to get to 10,000 career international runs and it marked a great occasion for the sport in Bangladesh as a whole. Shakib registered a quick half century while Tamim brought up a ton to mark the special day for him.
After Shakib went for 72, Mossadek Hossain joined the party with a 9 ball knock of 24. Thanks to Iqbal’s well made 127, Bangladesh registered a massive 324-5 in 50 overs.
Sri Lanka got off to a disastrous start as Danushka Gunathilaka was dismissed on the third ball of the chase by Mashrafe Mortaza. The quick wickets of Tharanga and Kusal Mendis didn’t help Sri Lanka’s cause either as Taskin Ahmed too chipped in with a wicket.
Dinesh Chandimal tried his best, but his knock of 59 could only salvage some pride as the required rate kept climbing up. The lower order included a brief cameo from Thisara Perera, but that was too late as Mustafizur Rahman cleaned up the tail with three strikes.
Bangladesh in the end comfortably won the game by 90 runs and have begun this series on the brightest note possible.
