An aggressive captain, Ganguly is credited with having nurtured the careers of many young players who played under him and transforming the Indian team into an aggressive fighting unit. He took over the captaincy role in 2000 when India was surrounded by the allegations of match-fixing and Sachin Tendulkar resigned from the post.

With his dominant strategies and tactics, he led the men in blue to the finals of the 2003 World Cup but was unfortunate to grab the trophy. However, he has won the ICC Champions Trophy in 2002 where India was declared joint Champions with Sri Lanka as the final was washed away.

Ganguly has featured in a couple of ICC tournaments and has given noteworthy contributions. He has struck four centuries in ICC World Cup and three centuries in ICC Champions Trophy.
