Batsmen with Most Runs in a Calendar Year

Virat Kohli managed three spots on the top ten list. This particular stats is revolving around three different formats of the game which include Test, One-day International and Twenty20 International. We have the minimum list of 77 batsmen with most runs in a calendar year.

Pertinently, there are some legendary batsmen who have had missed to break into the top ten list. Sourav Ganguly is placed 11th with Joe Root settled with 12th spot. However, Tillakaratne Dilshan is on the 13th place followed by legendary Sachin Tendulkar and his Sri Lankan former teammate and opening partner Sanath Jayasuriya.

Interestingly, a banned duo in the form of Steven Smith and David Warner are listed among the first 20 batsmen–to score most runs across formats in a calendar year. In March 2018, both faced a one-year ban following the ball-tampering saga in the Cape Town Test between hosts South Africa and visiting Australia.

Let’s have a look at the batsmen with most runs in a calendar year:

  1. Kumar Sangakkara- 2868 in 2014:

Former Sri Lankan cricketer Kumar Sangakkara did a bulk of the job during his international career for the national team. Moreover, the stylish southpaw added unique numbers under his belt before bidding farewell to International cricket.

The renowned wicket-keeper batsman is leading the chart with most runs in a calendar year.

In 2014, he amassed 2868 runs at the average of 53.11 in 48 games comprised of Tests, ODIs and T20Is respectively. While scoring runs at some pace, Sangakkara smashed eight hundreds and 18 half-centuries across formats in 57 innings, in a particular year. He remained not out on three occasions and walked out four times without contributing a run to his team.

  1. Ricky Ponting- 2833 in 2005:

During his international stint Ricky Ponting did his best to keep Australia on top as a leader and equally did well with the bat. Ponting smashed 2833 runs in 2005 at the average of 56.66. Ponting who had all the shots in his book consumed 4254 balls to score those runs at the overall strike-rate of 70.94.

Across formats, the reliable batsman for Australia registered nine hundred and 15 fifties to his name in 58 innings. Interestingly, he remained unbeaten on eight occasions and got dismissed on naught four times.

Ponting has undoubtedly gone down as one of the stalwarts of the gentleman’s game.

  1. Virat Kohli- 2818 in 2017:

Virat Kohli is the champion batsman in the contemporary cricket. Moreover, his consistency has surprised one and all across formats. Team India leader further went on to register a massive success while donning the captaincy hat.

The Delhi-born 29-year-old right-handed batsman is also on the verge of surpassing a couple of records.

Kohli is listed third on the list of most runs in a calendar year across formats. However, he went on to amass 2818 runs in 46 matches at the batting average of 68.73 in 2017. In 52 innings, Kohli further settled with 11 tons and ten fifties to his name.

  1. Virat Kohli- 2735 in 2018:

Once again Virat Kohli is in business to bag the fourth spot with 2735 runs in 2018 season. He amassed runs at the average of 68.37 in 37 matches.

The prominent figure in Indian set-up had scored a bulk of runs in away conditions apart from mega home success.

The passionate cricket smashed 11 hundred and nine fifties in 37 matches across formats. Banking on skills, Kohli excelled while weathering the criticism over his captaincy stint.

Also, known for wearing the heart on his sleeve Kohli didn’t allow pessimism to ruin his numbers with the bat.

  1. Kane Williamson- 2692 in 2015:

New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson has been in rollicking form over the years. The top-order batsman not only scored runs in any given condition but eventually played a significant role for the Black Caps as a skipper.

In 39 matches, Williamson scored 2692 runs at the staggering average of 65.65 in 2015. He further registered eight hundred and 14 half-centuries in 46 innings owing to the combined International format.

Williamson who got his team out of precarious situation many times faced 3573 deliveries to score runs at the strike-rate of 75.34.

  1. Angelo Mathews- 2687 in 2014:

Sri Lankan premier all-rounder Angelo Mathews had done a decent job over the years in the top-flight cricket. The right-handed batsman went on to score 2687 runs in a calendar year.

In 2014, Mathews featured in 53 games to score at the average of 65.53. He consumed 4142 balls in that particular calendar year while having the strike-rate of 64.87 across formats.

Mathews who is now suffering from a lean patch had already left an impact with his all-round performance before enjoying a captaincy stint.

Mathews remained unbeaten on 18 occasions which also stands as the most number by any player in the list of most runs in a calendar year across formats.

  1. Ricky Ponting- 2657 in 2003:

The ICC Hall of Famer Ricky Ponting made it to the list for the second time to smash most runs in a calendar year. The elegant stroke-maker Ponting during his heydays Ponting grabbed eyeballs for his immaculate batting apart from his captaincy.

Ponting who ever struggled during his career like any other star batsmen but kept on backing himself by making most of the opportunities.

In 2003, Ponting amassed 2657 runs at the batting average of 66.42. Across formats, in a particular calendar, he faced 3907 deliveries to score runs at the strike-rate of 68. He further managed to register 11 hundred and eight fifties.

  1. Rahul Dravid- 2626 in 1999:

Rahul Dravid who played an anchor-sheet role for India national cricket team further walked off as one of the prominent batsmen in the cricketing world. His presence in the Indian National Cricket team was enough to force opposition—to work on their strategies.

Down to earth, Dravid had shown courage and resilience to bail out his team during his International stint. In 1999, the classic right-handed batsman amassed 2626 runs at the average of 46.89. He further attributed it with ten centuries and nine half-centuries.

Dravid aka The Wall faced 4381 deliveries across formats in 1999 to score runs across formats at the strike-rate of 59.94.

  1. Kumar Sangakkara- 2609 in 2006:

Best in business, Kumar Sangakkara had often been in great form. In 2006, the exquisite timer of the ball amassed 2609 runs in 50 matches across formats and managed 2 sports in the top ten list of most runs in a calendar year.

The veteran left-handed batsman from the Island Nation further smashed five tons and 16 half-centuries in 55 matches across formats.

During that period, Sangakkara’s registered highest Test score of 287 apart from his highest-ever individual Test score of 319 which came against Bangladesh in 2014 at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chittagong.

  1. Virat Kohli- 2595 in 2016:

Indian National Cricket team skipper managed three spots on the top ten list of most runs in a calendar year. Virat Kohli has been in some sensational form with the bat. Since making his international debut, Kohli not only improved as a batsman but eventually went on to become a focal point for his run-scoring spree.

The modern-day rudder Kohli further backed youngsters to eke out results in a team’s favor.

In 2016 season, Kohli amassed 2596 runs at the staggering average of 86.50 in 37 matches. He consumed 2107 deliveries to score runs at the strike-rate of 80.91.

Also, Kohli smashed seven hundred and 13 fifties across formats in 2016 calendar year.
