BBL 06: Eoin Morgan’s Last-Ball Six Gives Sydney Thunder A Resounding Six-Wicket Win Over Melbourne Stars

Cometh the hour, cometh the man. Eoin Morgan, Sydney Thunder captain, who scored an unbeaten 71 off 50, led his side from the front in a dramatic last-ball finish to seal a thriller against Melbourne Stars by six wickets in the Big Bash League game on Wednesday.

You can’t ask for anything better than this from under-pressure Morgan, to witness a last-ball six down the ground on the bowling of Ben Hilfenhaus, when Thunder required five to win off the final delivery.

The left-handed batsman took it as close as he wanted to before giving it a whack as he was equally supported by Pat Cummins’ cameo.

His celebration was worth-watching when he jumped in joy with Cummins, who scored 22 off 20 balls to see whole crowd giving the skipper a standing round of applause for setting the stadium alight.

English batsman Morgan came to the crease when Thunder’s score was 2-42, there on he flayed the Stars’ attack to bring his half-century from 40 balls.

Interestingly, in the 12th over, there seemed a technical glitch with far-end camera in the studio after one of the side-angle cameras telecasted the game for over two overs.

After a dismal start from Thunder, at one stage they were in all sorts of trouble in the 13th over while teetering at 85 for four when middle-order batsman Ben Rohrer was bowled by leggie Adam Zampa on 20 off 19.

Sydney Thunder opening batsman Kurtis Patterson scored 28 runs off 18 balls before perishing to Scott Boland while giving some early impetus to his side. His partner Aiden Blizard was bowled by Hilfenhaus on five after facing 11 balls.

Hilfenhaus picked up two wickets on a spin-friendly track after giving away 39 runs. His partner Scott Boland bagged one along with leg-spinner Adam Zampa (1 for 19).

After winning the toss, Sydney Thunder skipper Shane Watson decided to bowl first against Stars.

While bringing up his first half-century of the tournament, Englishman Kevin Pietersen scored a brisk 60 off 37 balls while smashing seven boundaries and two sixes.

Stars opener Glenn Maxwell gave a flying start to his side while hitting some fine strokes. He scored 32 runs off 22 balls, which included six fours.

Maxwell was caught on the mid-wicket fence by Kurtis Patterson on the bowling of Watson when Stars hit 49 on scoreboard.

Watson took three wickets after conceding 23 runs in which two came from full-tosses.

Leg-spinner Fawad Ahmed picked uptwo wickets for 30. Luke Wright scored 25 runs and was eventually caught and bowled by leggie Fawad in the seventh over.

Thunder’s suffered a heavy blow in form of all-rounder Andre Russell, who was stretchered off after hamstring injury. The 32-year-old Russell could bowl only over in which he had conceded 10 runs.

Thunder off-spinner Chris Green picked two wickets after conceding 26 runs in 4 overs as Stars lost five wickets in the closing overs of the innings in just 20 runs to set 166 for 8 from their 20 overs.

With four straight losses from four matches, Thunder earned a much-needed win against Stars to open the mark in this year’s BBL points table. They are at the bottom of the ladder so far in their five games with only a win under their belt.

Brief Scores:

Melbourne Stars: 166 for 8 in 20 Overs

Sydney Thunder: 168 for 4 in 20 Overs

Sydney Thunder won by 6 wickets
