The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) on Monday (February 18) has announced that it will kick off the domestic Twent20 competition on the similar pattern of India’s shortest version of the List A competition; Syed Mushtaq Ali tournament. Also, the chairman for Cricket Committee of Dhaka Metropolis Kazi Inam Ahmed cited the example of Indian Premier League (IPL). He added the players in the cash-rich domestic league come through the Mushtaq Ali tournament.

The statement came following the drafting of players for the traditional day-long edition of the Dhaka Premier League (DPL). Apart from increasing the pool of talents, Inam reiterated that it would allow Bangladesh to introduce local players to its own Bangladesh Premier League (BPL).

Since the past couple of years, the Tigers have failed to introduce high-quality T20 players to make it big in the top-flight cricket.

“I think this is the first step forward to take T20 cricket ahead in our country. For example, there is the Syed Mushtaq tournament in India. And a lot of cricketers come to the IPL from there after showcasing their talent in the tournament,” Inam told Cricbuzz.

Inam revealed as many as 12 teams will partake in the domestic event. He added this competition would help players to express themselves.

“We decided to launch the T20 tournament that will be played between the 12 participating teams of DPL. We want to make this T20 tournament quite similar to it where we can give some potential T20 cricketers a solid platform to show their talent,” Inam added.

The proposal set sights on to improve the domestic set-up, and to help in producing the quality players. The thrust has been on the players to get the right platform to showcase their talents.

According to the early reports, the tournament is highly-likely going to be named as Twenty20 Cricket Tournament or the DPL.

Moreover, the tourney will run between February 25 and March 3.

“Initially, it will be played on a small scale, so we decided to complete the tournament within a week’s time, but in future, we will try to hold it in a bigger way,” Inam stressed.

The week-long tournament will see teams being distributed among four groups. So much so, the club-based tourney will witness table toppers making it to the semi-finals.

With final scheduled for March 3, the semi-finals will commence on March 1.
