Mobile manufacturing company OPPO has replaced Star India as the new sponsor of the Indian cricket team. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has signed a five-year contract with OPPO which begins from April 2017.
“The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is pleased to announce OPPO Mobiles India Private Limited as the new team sponsor for the Indian Cricket Team,” the BCCI said in a statement on Tuesday.
The BCCI had set a base price of Rs. 2.2 crore per game for all the bilateral games and Rs. 70 lakh for every ICC-tournament match India would feature in till March 2022. On the other hand, Star India was paying Rs 1.92 crore per match for bilateral matches (base price was set at Rs 1.5 crore) and Rs 61 lakh for ICC championship series.
The amount of the winning bid is still unclear but reports are suggesting that the deal is likely to have gone beyond Rs 538 crore, the amount paid by STAR India in 2013 when they signed a four-year deal. The outgoing sponsors had already confirmed not to continue with the sponsorship the team post 31st March 2017 due to BCCI’s problems with International Cricket Council over the distribution of revenue. Star India’s CEO Uday Shankar had confirmed the news last month.
