Once again Conflict of Interest Issue struck the Indian Cricket Board. Regarding the same, the Board of Control for Cricket in India asked a few of the former Indian cricketers to choose one between the commentary role and IPL role. Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, VVS Laxman are the few of them.
The 2019 ICC World Cup has seen a plethora of Indian stars including the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly appear in the commentary box. While it was pleasing for the average Indian fan to listen to their anecdotes, the same can’t be said about BCCI’s ethics officer DK Jain.
DK Jain questions the Indian former cricketers:
As per The Indian Express, it is learnt that the BCCI’s Ethics Officer, D K Jain, in an order passed on an internal conflict-of-interest complaint, has questioned the presence of stars like Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, VVS Laxman, Harbhajan Singh and close to 20 other former and current cricketers in the commentary box for the ongoing tournament in England.
Sachin Tendulkar has been associated with Mumbai Indians (MI) for a long time. Ganguly was appointed as Delhi Capitals (DC) advisor for IPL 2019. And also, he is the president of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB).
On the other hand, Harbhajan Singh is still a part of MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Meanwhile, Laxman continues to serve as the mentor of Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH).
The order effectively means they will have to choose between being with IPL teams, cricket administration, coaching role or commentary. It is understood, the rule will apply irrespective of whether they are contracted with the BCCI or the broadcasters.
The ethics officer ruled that these cricketers were violating the recommendations. And also, the laws on conflict of interest of the Supreme Court-appointed Lodha panel by holding multiple positions.
This is not the first time to see that rule creating an impact. Earlier, as a result of the recommendations, Rahul Dravid had to let go of his role. He was serving as Delhi Daredevils’ mentor. After which, the BCCI gave him a fresh contract as coach of India A and India U-19 A for two years.
