BCCI Commentators to Sign Undertakings to Avoid Conflict of Interest

The Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) commentary panel will reportedly have to sign an undertaking stating that they are not avoiding the ‘Conflict of Interest’.

The decision has been taken as per the recommendations of the Supreme Court-appointed Lodha Panel. As per the reports, Sunil Gavaskar, Sanjay Manjrekar, Murali Kartik and Harsha Bhogle have been enlisted by the board which is yet to issue an official statement.

“We have discussed the names but it has not been finalised. We need to look into the Conflict of Interest rules properly. We still don’t know who’s having what interest,” Diana Edulji told media on Wednesday (August 9).

And while the Committee of Administrators member stated that the board is yet to finalise anything, a BCCI source revealed that the BCCI does not want to take any chances. The source said that the board has zeroed in on the four aforementioned commentators and they will have to submit an undertaking. It will mainly ask them to declare that they do not have any relationship with any Players’ Management Firm.

“The Lodha Panel reforms states clearly that one needs to ensure that anyone associated with the BCCI does not have any Conflict of Interest. We must remember that former COA member Ramchandra Guha, in his resignation letter, had referred to Gavaskar’s involvement with Professional Management Group,” the source told PTI.

Earlier this year, former Committee of Administrators member Ramachandra Guha had launched a scathing attack towards Gavaskar. The historian had expressed strong reservations about Gavaskar’s business interests in Professional Management Group (PMG) and his firm managing a current player—Shikhar Dhawan.

“Sunil Gavaskar is head of a company which represents Indian cricketers while commenting on those cricketers as part of the BCCI TV commentary panel. This is a clear conflict of interest. Either he must step down/withdraw himself from PMG completely or stop being a commentator for BCCI,” Guha had written in his resignation letter.
