Well, the number system set to enter into the Test format of the game. With the Test Championship all set to make its way, the International Cricket Council has brought a few changes to it. One of those is to wear numbered-Jersey during the match. Meanwhile, the Indian Cricket Team hints at retiring Number 7 Jersey as a mark of respect to MS Dhoni.
MS Dhoni retired from Test cricket a long time ago. However, it seems his jersey number is expected to follow him in retirement in Test cricket soon. The upcoming World Test Championship will feature jersey numbers behind the white shirts for the first time.
There are two numbers that the Indian team is unlikely to use during the Test series against the West Indies in Antigua starting August 22. Sachin Tendulkar‘s famous jersey No.10 has already been “unofficially retired” by the BCCI from white-ball cricket after pacer Shardul Thakur wore it briefly and was heavily trolled on social media.
People relate Jersey Number 7 to MS Dhoni – BCCI
As no one wears the Jersey number of Sachin Tendulkar, they would also opt to not wear number 7 Jersey, as fans relate to that number Emotionally. However, for now, it is available to wear but the players wouldn’t pick it, as a mark of respect.
“Virat is expected to wear 18 while Rohit wears 45. Most of the players will wear their respective ODI and T20 numbers. Since MS is no longer playing Test cricket, jersey No.7 is available but there is very little chance that any of the players will wear it,” an official said.
“People relate jersey No 7 with MS. The consignment of numbered jerseys will only arrive in the Caribbean only after ODI series,” a senior BCCI official said on condition of anonymity.
The Indian team led by Virat Kohli will next tour Windies as a part of World Championship. They are entering into the game after winning the series against Australia in Australia. With the team performing extremely well, they haven’t tinkered much to the squad.
The only change to that squad is Wriddhiman Saha, who recovered from the surgery. Apart from that, the rest remains the same. The series will start in the first week of August. Initially, they will face in T20I matches before entering into ODI and Test format of the game.
