Is BCCI A National Sports Federation?: Central Information Commission

The Central Information Commission (CIC) has questioned the status of BCCI, asking the sports ministry to clarify if it is a national sports federation. The Commission also asked the cricket board and its Committee of Administrators (CoA) to look into the serious issues of conflict of interest raised by its member Ramachandra Guha in his resignation letter.
Ramachandran Guha had earlier resigned from his post. He wrote a letter stating plight. The order came on an appeal filed by an RTI applicant regarding the constitutional provision under which the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selects the Indian national team. Applicant Om Prakash Kashiram approached CIC after the information was denied by the information officer.
Information Commissioner M Sridhar Acharyulu said in his order:
“In the interest of good governance and healthy cricket, to avoid scams like match fixing, conflict of interests, misappropriation of public money etc besides upholding the sporting spirit, BCCI should get ready to be fully transparent in all its functions, or conduct itself like a responsible national sports federation, and voluntarily publish its information as if it is the public authority under RTI Act till the Union of India formally declared it as a public authority through appropriate means.”
