BCCI Secretary Downplays The Rift Between Anil Kumble and Virat Kohli

BCCI Secretary Amitabh Chaudhary has denied any reported rift between Team India skipper Virat Kohli and Head Coach Anil Kumble. In a recent chat with the media, Chaudhary refused to give any validity to the rumoured disharmony between Kumble and Kohli.

“I cannot see any smoke at all: Amitabh Chaudhary, Secretary, BCCI on a rift between Virat Kohli and Anil Kumble.”

The Champions Trophy has begun with a reported discontent in the dressing room, as news reports have been speculating an uneasiness between the star captain – coach duo.

It is also learned that Kohli has spoken about his coach with both the BCCI office bearers and the Committee of Administrators (COA).

The future of Kumble seems uncertain after he was not handed an automatic extension of his contract. BCCI chose to advertise for the position of the head coach on its official website. The applications for the job have already met its deadline which was May 31.

Kohli’s feedback to the BCCI where he claimed Kumble to be too strict with his approach further heated things up. The players’ concerns are thought to centre mainly on Kumble’s man-management skills. The captain and some of the senior players seem to be fed up with Kumble’s ‘Headmaster’ like approach.

His unbending approach is now being connected with some of the injuries which the players suffered in recent past. The former leg spinner’s contract ends with the Champions trophy.

The BCCI secretary also highlighted the same fact and stated that the BCCI has chosen to follow the process, as the contract was set for a limited period of time.

“Appointment was made for certain time and that is ending. BCCI is following a process and Cricket Advisory Committee will take the decision,” BCCI.

While Kumble may not have got an automatic extension, his name has been added as a direct entry into the list. It is also understood that Kumble will face competition from former teammate Virender Sehwag, Tom Moody, Richard Pybus, Lalchand Rajput and Dodda Ganesh.

Another exciting name that may jump into the race would be Ravi Shastri. The former team director, was the front-runner for the job before Anil Kumble was appointed by the Cricket Advisory Committee, comprising Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman.

The star trio asked Kumble’s name to be included in the list and turned him as the most favoured candidate to take over the job last year.
