BCCI Shows Incapability To Bear Tour Expense, Requests ECB To Carry The Cost

In a surprising move made by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the secretary of the board, Ajay Shirke, has written to the England team manager Phil Neal and has shown incompetency of the board to imply upon the MOU between the two countries requesting ECB to bear the expenses of the tour, from travelling bills to that of expense of hotels etc.

Here is the copy of the letter send by Ajay Shirke to the ECB official –

“Dear Phil, I warmly welcome you for the upcoming cricket series. I am however at great pains to inform you that the BCCI is at present not in a position to execute the MoU between the Indian Cricket Board and the ECB. This is due to restrictions on the execution of contracts imposed on the BCCI by a Court order.

“A Committee has been appointed that is also to oversee financial transactions of the BCCI. The BCCI has referred this issue to the Committee appointed by the Supreme Court (Lodha Committee) on 28.10.2016 itself and sought urgent permission for execution of the MoU. Thereafter I have also sent the hon’ble Committee a request again today. However, the Committee while seeking further details a short while ago earlier today, has not yet granted us this permission.

“Certain courtesies such as hotel, travel, and various other arrangements have been extended to you on arrival of the team in India. However, till the MoU is executed, the BCCI is not in a position to commit to paying for the same. Please make arrangements to remit such payments. The BCCI will inform you as and when further instructions are received by the BCCI from the Lodha Committee.

“I apologize on behalf of the BCCI for the inconvenience that is being caused.”

A clear message has been sent by the BCCI to Lodha committee that they are not going to comply and imply all the recommendations made by them. Last time, it was just a scare by signalling to cancel the New Zealand series but this is a step towards cancelling the series.

On learning this, the ECB spokesperson said the England team is already in India and no changes can be made now in the tour plan. He showed clear signal to follow the tour plan regardless of issue pertaining between board and committee as mentioned by Shirke in his later, “We are already in India, there is no change to any plans and we are looking forward to the series against India,” said the ECB spokesman.

This issue has now gone bad to worse as according to Lodha recommendations, now it will an auditor appointed by the committee that will fix a fixed amount that can be spent by BCCI and will keep a check on that. Denied to work on its own, a baffled BCCI is taking every step to really scare Lodha panel by playing tricks, but this time it looks like Lodha Panel will stick to the recommendations with no tendency to move away from the set of rules and regulations.

If current scenario continues long, then England going back without playing the series can really be the scene in the future.
