BCCI Sidelines Captain’s View On Umpires

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has taken a bold step in which they have decided to scrap captains views on an umpire after the completion of domestic matches. Instead of captains, it’ll be the match referee who will be sending his consent to the board from now.
“The match referee also serves as the third umpire. They are in a better position to provide a fair and balanced report with the help of video analysts,” a top BCCI official told TOI.
“It has been done to eliminate any emotion in the reports. A captain can have bias or grudge against the umpire. The referee, in that sense, has nothing at stake,” the official said.
It looks like a fair call from the board as a captain might have something personal against the umpires if he is not happy with the decisions made by them. It can have an impact on the career of an umpire as board analyses performances of umpires on regular basis and any kind of false or biased claim can make his image bad. Along with that, captains also do not take this thing seriously as said by the official.
“(But) the reports submitted by the captains didn’t really help. They were written very casually. The captains neither talked about the positive nor did they mention any negative about umpiring which doesn’t really help. It also came to notice that somebody other than the captain, like the manager or some other member of the support staff, used to file these reports.”
This move will surely help the board to judge the performance of an umpire and get an unbiased feedback.
