He is called the ‘God of Off-Side’, he is the pioneer of agressive cricket in India, he is the game changer- he is Dada. He wore his heart in the sleeves and when he used to get on his front-foot there was no stopping him. Many of his sixers have made people get off their seats with excitement but here is one such instance that was special. A nightmare of an over for any bowler it was, when three of his deliveries were hit for not only for maximum, but out of the arena as well.
It was the finals of Coca-Cola Champions trophy 1998 and India were facing Zimbabwe at Sharjah. In the past two cases of the series, India and Zimbabwe both had won 1 match each. The final match started with Zimbabwe batting first. They put up 196 runs in 50 overs for the loss of 9 wickets and then it was the Indian side who were to bat.
The two openers, Sachin and Sourav, walked into the ground. Well, the rest is history. The duo went on to score the whole run on their own, letting India win by 10 wickets. Sachin scored an unbeaten 124 and Ganguly scored 63.But this was not all. The most memorable incident for Sourav Ganguly fanatics was something else.
In the 21st over, Sourav hit 3 sixes. That’s not very astonishing though as he has done things like this quite a few times. The more interesting part is that, all the three sixes had landed outside the stadium. The first ball went over long on and the umpire had to call for a new ball. As Grant Flower let a sigh of relief seeing the next ball going for dot, Ganguly promptly made him unhappy sending the next couple of balls over the same roof and out of the ground. And then, “The roof was called ‘Ganguly’s roof’ “.
