Dhoni

The year 2017 has not yet given Indian cricket fans anything to cheer but in stark contrast, they were given some excruciating news, on Wednesday.

India’s most successful test captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has today decided to step down from a captain’s role and has put an end to one of the most exciting times for Indian cricket.

The Jharkhand-born wicket keeper came into the side under former skipper Saurav Ganguly and he slowly took over the mantle from Dada to take India to unprecedented heights.

In his time as the captain of the national side, Dhoni, has given the fans plenty to cheer about and the end to his stint as a captain was met with a lot of distress in the media.

Speaking to the media late on Wednesday, Rahul Johri, Chief Executive Officer of the BCCI revealed that the World Cup winning captain informed the BCCI that he wants to step down from the skipper’s post for the upcoming series against England at home.

Dhoni, who has already announced his retirement from the longest format of the game, was expected to stay with the team for a longer time but he has now decided that it is time for him to hang up the boots.

He also conveyed that he is available for selection for the ODI and the T20 series against England in India later this month and is expected to be selected.

Rahul Johri, Chief Executive Officer of the BCCI said, “On the behalf of every Indian cricket fan and the BCCI, I would like to thank MS Dhoni for his outstanding contribution as the captain of the Indian team across all formats.”

The Best Reason On The Internet For Dhoni's Latest Decision: From Harsha Bhogle 1

“Under his leadership, the Indian team has touched new heights and his achievements will remain etched forever in the annals of Indian cricket,” he added.

The 35-year old has won the T20 World Cup, the ODI World Cup and the Champions Trophy as the skipper of the national side while also helping the team to the top of the rankings in all three formats for the first time in their history.

He remains as the most successful test captain for India to date and is easily one of the best players to play for the country.

So his decision to step down as a captain is a bit amusing.

Cricket expert Harsha Bhogle is currently on an exile from the media coverage, took it to Twitter to reveal the exact reason why MSD took this step.

He congratulated Dhoni on Twitter for his achievements and had a peculiar view on his recent decision. He felt that the next World Cup was a viable option for Dhoni but went on to say that this was the perfect time for the wicket keeper to hand over the mantle to Virat Kohli, as it will help the new skipper of the side, get into the groove long before the next two ICC trophies.

Here are his tweets:

Bhogle may be right in more than one ways but India has today lost its greatest captain, at least in terms of success and it might have its own effect on the success of the side in the future.
