It Was Best Time For Misbah-Ul-Haq To Bow Out On A High: Zaheer Abbas

As Misbah-Ul-Haq announced to retire from International cricket after the West Indies’ three-match series which is scheduled from April 21, the former cricketers from Pakistan have praised his services for the national team while ending his career on high.

Moreover, the 42-year-old Misbah’s decision to call time for his international career was lauded by the former veterans for achieving best results for Pakistan.

The former President of International Cricket Council (ICC) Zaheer Abbas has lauded Misbah for raising the bar of Pakistan with his achievements in the recent past.

“Misbah is a great captain and the most successful Test captain too which is a great achievement,” Zaheer was quoted as saying by Express Tribune.

Misbah shouldered the captaincy responsibility after the spot-fixing surfaced in 2010, which shook the Pakistan team.

“A captain of a national team of any format always wants to be better than his predecessors and Misbah has been successful in doing that,” Zaheer said.

However, Misbah has been at the forefront for Pakistan as he led his national side in 53 Tests prior to the West Indies Test series while winning 24 games and eventually losing out on 18.

“He is also the captain to play the most Test matches which has made him the most successful captain too,” Zaheer added.

Eleven games were drawn as Misbah’s win percentage remained 45.28, who is listed number twelfth for the most matches as a skipper.

Zaheer also expressed his satisfaction over Misbah’s performance while saying bad patch comes in anyone’s career following the stellar of the performances.

“A decision of retiring is a player’s own but it takes lot of thinking before that. But for Misbah, it was the best time as he will bow out on a high,” Zaheer said.

Former Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief selector Salahuddin Sallu has echoed the words of Zaheer Abbas by stating it was the right time for Misbah to announce his retirement while adding the counterpart of current oldest Test skipper Misbah were able to read his strategy which further leads to ‘poor performance’ of the team.

“He has played his innings to become the most successful captain and now it’s the right time to leave the position,” he said. People were beginning to read his game and that was leading to the team’s poor performance. He called it quits at the best moment,” Salahuddin stated.

Salahuddin urged the members of the national board to give a proper farewell to the most successful captain of Pakistan as he deserves for leading Pakistan to a number one ranking in the longer version of the game.

“We have to make sure that the most successful captain of our history should get deserving farewell as he has won many matches for Pakistan and lifted Pakistan to the top,” Salahuddin added.

Moreover, Salahuddin added it won’t be that easy for Pakistan to fill Misbah place while terming he was the best in the business given to his calm and composed character.

“A replacement of the greatest captain would be a difficult task for the board but whoever is given the responsibility would have to keep the level of captaincy, at least up to the level of Misbah,” Salahuddin concluded.

The Punjab-born Misbah has played 72 Tests in which he has scored 4,951 runs at an average of 45.84 which included 10 hundreds and 36 fifties after making his Test debut against New Zealand in 2001.
