Big Bash League 2018-19: Sydney Thunder vs Perth Scorchers – Review. Sydney Thunder won the 17th match of the ongoing Big Bash League 2018-19 by defeating Perth Scorchers by one run as the match went down to the wire. It was a slow wicket as batsmen struggled to hit the ground running. Shane Watson won the toss and decided to bat first.

1st Innings:

Shane Watson could not get back into form as Jason Behrendorff took a sharp caught and bowled. However, Callum Fergusson and Jos Buttler added a crucial alliance of 82 runs. Callum Fergusson was the aggressor and took on the attack to the opposition. However, the right-hander was cleaned by a shooter from Ashton Agar.

It was a white-knuckle.

Jos Buttler played an uncharacterised inning as he scored 55 runs from 54 balls. In fact, Buttler knew that the pitch was difficult and brought his third fifty of the season. He was unfortunately hit wicket while attempting to play the reverse sweep.

England Test captain Joe Root chopped the ball on the stump while attempting to play the sweep shot. Chris Green played a little cameo of 18 runs off just nine balls to apply the finishing touches. Furthermore, Ashton Agar scalped two wickets for 27 wickets.

2nd Innings:

The two-times champions Perth Scorchers didn’t get off to an ideal start. The Sydney Thunder spinners made life difficult for the visitors and didn’t let them off the hook. Fawad Ahmed and Jonathan Cook got the better off the middle order. In fact, Fawad Ahmed affected a brilliant run-out where he hit the bullseye when he had only one stump to aim at. Ahmed was the pick of the bowlers for his two wickets and conceded only 22 runs.

However, Perth Scorchers captain Ashton Turner kept his team in the hunt as he scored a valiant knock of 60 runs from 36 balls. Turner kept coming with boundaries to keep his team alive. In fact, four runs were needed off the final ball but Turner could not hit the boundary.

This was Scorchers fourth loss of the ongoing season as they are at the penultimate position.

Perth Scorchers: 141-5, Ashton Turner: 60 (36), Fawad Ahmed: 2-22.
