Big Shot: Poster Boy Rashid Khan wants World Cup Title in War-Torn Afghanistan

The poster boy for Afghanistan top-flight cricket and promising rookie leg-spinner Rashid Khan has lofty ambitions while aiming to make big out of his international career, as he stands fresh in the gentleman’s game.

Banking on the success, the 19-year-old wily customer Rashid is hopeful that he would bring coveted World Cup to his motherland while adding it’s been his dream.

“I want to bring Afghanistan the cricket World Cup. This is the ultimate goal of my life,” Rashid told AFP.

However, the statement from Rashid looks highly improbable, but the wrist spinner has risen to the occasion.

The path-breaking appearance in cricket from Rashid has made him further a prominent face back in politically-troubled Afghanistan where he started off while playing tennis ball cricket, before bursting onto the international scene in October 2015 against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo.

It’s pertinent to mention, Rashid has been one of the best players in current Afghanistan national side who have recently earned the Test status alongside Ireland from the world cricket governing body ICC during its Annual Meeting.

Rashid has impressed selectors while working under the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) after a splendid run in domestic cricket other than first-class fold in Nangarhar.

“I play cricket to bring victories for my country and to make Afghanistan proud on the world stage,” Rashid remarked.

Moreover, after featuring in different T20 leagues across the globe, Rashid was picked by Big Bash League franchise Adelaide Strikes, as their coach Jason Gillespie reiterated the former has been phenomenal with the white ball.

“Rashid has set the world alight in T20 cricket with his energy, enthusiasm, and great control for a young guy,” Gillespie maintained.

In the recently concluded fifth edition of 2017 Shpageeza Cricket League (SCL), the outfit Band-e-Amir Dragons was crowned as champions, as the side further saw Rashid played a pivotal role in the 12-day competition.

“He has some great variations, can bowl stump-to-stump and can be very hard to pick,” Gillespie added.

In the recently concluded tenth edition of widely-acclaimed Indian Premier League (IPL), Rashid piled-up the miseries for top-notch batters on his Twenty20 professional debut in India for IPL franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad led which was led by David Warner.

So much so, Rashid became the first bowler in the 2017 Caribbean Premier League’s (CPL) fifth edition to claim a hat-trick for Guyana Amazon Warriors while playing against Jamaica Tallawahs

“Now, I want to play against the world’s best and to challenge the best teams on their home turf,” Rashid asserted.

As Rashid is scheduled to play in Australia, the former England skipper Adam Hollioke, who was nursing the SCL outfit Boost Defenders during the six-team competition feels Afghanistan has a lot of untapped talent and it needs to be worked.

“I really believe the talent and passion is here in this country,” Hollioake concluded.

Rashid played 29 One-day internationals and 27 Twenty20 Internationals. He has impressive bowling average in the limited-overs competition after bagging 63 in 50-over format and 42 scalps in T2OIs.
