Bowlers Need To Bowl A Lot In The Nets To Do Well, Says Shane Bond

Former New Zealand fast bowler Shane Bond has stressed the importance of having regular net sessions to stay conditioned as an international fast bowler.

Writing in a column for the International Cricket Council (ICC), Bond said the hectic travel schedule for the Indian Premier League (IPL) has made it very difficult for the cricketers to face the challenge of adjusting to increased workload in the Champions Trophy.

“Because of the condensed schedules in the IPL, and the heat and the travel, the bowlers haven’t been bowling a lot in the nets.

“Going into the ICC Champions Trophy, where the top bowlers will be expected to bowl their quota of 10 overs, will pose a unique kind of challenge in terms of the bowlers not having had enough of a workload.

Sweating it out in nets is often the first important thing which is very strictly obeyed by cricketers and coaches regardless of the playing conditions. Bond pointed in the column that physical training is as important as other aspects to maintain effectiveness.

“It is important that it is not just your skills that are up to speed, you need to have had miles in the legs as well,” he explained.

He also feels that while playing in England will be very soothing as far as weather conditions are compared with India, he also wrote that making the adjustments in the workload may become slight issues.

“There are a couple of things that will be different in England and Wales from the IPL. One is, of course, the heat, and going from India to the United Kingdom will be a bit of a relief,” he said.

“The other, obviously, is time on the feet from an hour-and-a-half to three-and-a-half hours. All the players have been training and are in good shape physically, so this adjustment shouldn’t be particularly demanding, but the issue of bowling workloads is another matter altogether,” he added.

Bond spoke about some tactical and technical stuff. In the IPL, cricketers often were different hats and fill in completely different roles than what they were doing with the national team. He gave examples of India’s Rohit Sharma and Australia’s Aaron Finch.

Both Rohit and Aaron played in the middle order for their respective franchises Mumbai Indians and Gujarat Lions. But, originally, both perform the role of an opener for their national teams, India and Australia. Therefore, both the individuals have to quickly adapt to the change in role and get accustomed to facing the new ball at the earliest, Bond puts forth this factor.

“Rohit Sharma has been batting in the middle-order for us and similarly Aaron Finch for Gujarat Lions, and both of them will need to re-adjust to playing the new ball, in English conditions, when they open the batting for their respective countries,” he stated.

“There will be a couple of subtle differences, and I am sure these experienced guys are equipped enough to cope with those requirements, ” he said.
