Brad Haddin feels series against South Africa will be a “cracker”
After being humiliated by South Africa in the five-match ODI series away from home, Australia will be eager to inflict a similar result upon the Proteas. The upcoming 3 match test series Down Under offers an ideal opportunity for Australia indeed. First and foremost, South Africa will be without the services of their regular captain AB De Villiers, who has been ruled out due to an injury. Secondly, despite their mediocre away test record, Australia have been a formidable side at home.
According to former Australian wicketkeeper Brad Haddin, the series against South Africa will be a “cracker” of a contest. South Africa emerged victorious on their previous couple of tours to Australia, as they won 2-1 in 2008/09 and 1-0 in 2012/13. In both series’, AB De Villiers played a crucial role behind South Africa’s triumphs.
Haddin, speaking to cricket.com.au, said that the Aussie pacers at home could be too good for the Proteas. “I think(South Africa would have got a lot of confidence out of that ODI series, but it will be a different Australian team once we roll out Starc, Hazlewood off and hopefully Siddle will be back we well,” Haddin said. “I think it will be a cracker of a series.”
Haddin added that he expected the left-handed Usman Khawaja to replace Joe Burns at the top. “I expect Khawaja to come straight back in,” Haddin said. “I thought he did an outstanding job in New Zealand and in Australian conditions last year.”I’d expect them to hold on to Shaun Marsh as opener to be perfectly honest, but I hear he’s torn his hamstring again, poor kid. “He seems to do that every time a position looks to be open to him.”
Backing young wicketkeeper Cameron Bancroft, the former Australia keeper said, “I was highly impressed with him.” “He’s got a great love for Test cricket, he ticks every box with the passion he shows and his work ethic. “We just need him now to score some big runs and he’ll be straight into that Australian team.”
